Safety, mobility, accessibility and job creation are key to the Nevada Department of Transportation’s (NDOT) Project NEON endeavor along Interstate 15 and surrounding streets.
Interstate 15 in the heart of the Las Vegas Valley is the busiest stretch of freeway in the state of Nevada. One-tenth of the state’s population, or approximately 270,000 motorists, traverses the Interstate 15 corridor at the Spaghetti Bowl daily.
The interstate serves commuters and tourists as it offers access to the Las Vegas Strip and delivers visitors to the revitalized downtown entertainment center and adjacent Medical District. It is also the primary thoroughfare for commercial vehicles traveling to and through Southern Nevada.
With that in mind, NDOT embarked on Project NEON to improve the quality of life in the Las Vegas Valley.
Project NEON will improve safety, provide multiple access points to Las Vegas communities, enhance the freeway system’s high-occupancy vehicle network and add aesthetically pleasing amenities to the corridor’s aging neighborhoods.
It is anticipated that Project NEON will reduce travel times by 22 percent, saving motorists about $110 million each year in hours of productivity. Without Project NEON, Southern Nevadans can expect complete gridlock during peak hours on Interstate 15 by the year 2030.
Project NEON is a design-build project, meaning the same general contractor will design and construct the project, expediting the process.
