The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and Responsibility.org have awarded $130,000 in grants to Nevada, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, and Maryland towards proven safety countermeasures for the identification and treatment of drug-impaired drivers. This is the program’s eighth year, totaling nearly $1 million in funding to address this important issue.
Nevada will utilize the funds to train case managers to screen and assess impaired driving offenders and train judges to use the findings to make more informed sentencing decisions. This training will utilize the Computerized Assessment Referral System (CARS), which can identify substance abuse disorders and mental health issues. In turn, this leads to personalized treatment recommendations and more individualized sentencing decisions for defendants and reduces the likelihood of recidivism.
