Double Down on What Works

In 2008, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) began promoting infrastructure-oriented safety treatments and strategies that can offer significant, measurable impacts as part of any agency’s data-driven, systemic approach to improving safety. FHWA’s Proven Safety Countermeasures initiative is a collection of countermeasures and strategies effective in reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries on our nation’s highways. FHWA’s Office of Safety recently added nine new proven safety countermeasures, which brings the total to 28. The new Proven Safety Countermeasures added include:

Speed Safety CamerasVariable Speed Limits

Appropriate Speed Limits for All Road UsersWider Edge Lines

Crosswalk Visibility EnhancementsBicycle Lanes

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB)Pavement Friction management

Transportation agencies are strongly encouraged to consider widespread implementation of the countermeasures to accelerate the achievement of local, state, and national safety goals. Reaching our goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries requires all of us to take ownership in safety.
