Driver’s Edge returns to Reno with free events Thursday through Sunday, July 21-24, 2016 and September 10-11, 2016 at the Regional Public Safety Training Center. To date, over 110,000 young drivers and their parents across the United States have attended Driver’s Edge, an innovative and potentially life saving program based out of Las Vegas.
Every day, nearly 900 young people aged 16 to 20 are injured and another 11 are killed in automobile related collisions. Car collisions are the number one killer of America’s youth. It’s time to make a difference because the statistics regarding young drivers are staggering:
- Every 23 seconds of every day a driver aged 15 to 20 is in a police reported collision;
- The crash involvement rate for young drivers is three times greater than the average driver;
- Young drivers make up only 6.4% of total drivers but account for 11.4% of all collisions;
We are determined to change these statistics. On July 21-24 and September 10-11, 2016, Driver’s Edge will provide free training for young drivers in an effort to combat the unacceptably high number of teen related auto collisions and driving fatalities. Taught by true driving professionals, this unique program combines both behind the wheel and classroom experiences designed to alter young drivers attitudes and behavior. It also serves as a wake-up call to help erase the video game mentality that is common among many of today’s young drivers. Exercises include expert instruction on skid control, evasive lane changing, panic braking, combating unexpected situations and more real life training that might one day save a life.
An independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and public charity, Driver’s Edge is dedicated to saving lives behind the wheel. This type of training needs to be available to everyone, not just those who can afford it. As a result, while a comparable program would cost approximately $450 per person, there is NO CHARGE for young drivers to attend Driver’s Edge, thanks to a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, private charitable donations and the generous support of community oriented companies such as the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Regional Public Safety Training Center, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Champion Chevrolet, the Grand Sierra Resort and the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Programs will be held at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm each day.
Registration is open to young drivers age 21 or younger with a valid driver’s license or permit.
