In October 2018, the Nevada Highway Patrol, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), and the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety created the Southern Nevada DUI Strike Team to make the roads safer for the community. The goal of the group is to one day have zero fatalities on the road and their approach is focused on reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road.
Fast forward to October 2019, the Strike Team has made quite an impact. They are proud to announce that they made their 1,000th DUI arrest. The team has helped reduce the number of traffic fatalities in Las Vegas involving an impaired driver from an astounding 48% down to 22%. In addition to the DUI arrests, they have also confiscated 28 guns, filed 52 citations for possession of a controlled substance, and captured seven wanted fugitives.
The team currently consists of five LVMPD officers, three troopers, and one LVMPD sergeant with plans to expand the team. For now, they are proud of the impact they have made in the last year and they look forward to continuing to make the roads safer for everyone.
