The Nevada Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS) provided a $50K grant to the Las Vegas Justice Court for continued placement of a Specialty Courts Coordinator with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Treatment Court, which saw a recidivism rate of only 1.4% for its participants in 2019. The treatment court was established in 2003 and offers a comprehensive treatment program for misdemeanor DUI offenders. This includes treatment services and court supervision utilizing the following methods:
- Alcohol and drug monitoring technology
- Random observed alcohol and drug testing
- Use of sanctions for non-compliance
The treatment program aims to decrease the number of repeat offenders by helping misdemeanor offenders with substance abuse disorders that may be an underlying cause of their DUI offenses. Nevada’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Impaired Driving Prevention Task Force also supports efforts like the Las Vegas Justice Court through its emphasis on strategies to further DUI Court training throughout the state.
