2016 Nevada Traffic Safety Summit Recap

Summit RecapThe 2016 Nevada Traffic Safety Summit was held on May 24-25 at the South Point Resort in Las Vegas. The purpose of the 2016 Summit was to gather safety partners from around the state to share best practices for implementing strategies and action steps to reach the ultimate goal of Zero Fatalities in Nevada. Approximately 250 attendees participated in the two-day Summit, representing the four “E’s” of transportation safety: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, Emergency Medical Services, and the fifth “E” – Everyone.

The Summit kicked off with the Motorcycle Safety Forum Tuesday morning, followed by the a keynote luncheon where Ken Mammen, Chief Traffic Safety Engineer with NDOT, and Colonel Dennis Osborn, Chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol and Chair of the Nevada Executive Committee on Traffic Safety welcomed attendees. Jurek Grabowski, Director of Research with AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington, DC, delivered the keynote presentation on Safety Culture.

A panel discussion with Nevada elected officials was held Tuesday afternoon, which focused on how the safety community can get involved in legislative efforts; followed by a Traffic Incident Management presentation and discussion on safe, quick clearance of crash scenes.

Day two was packed with a variety of breakout sessions, covering topics on Pedestrian Safety, Communications and Outreach, Driver Behavior, Complete Streets, Traffic Incident Management, Tribal and Rural Programs, and Impaired Driving. The Impaired Driving track included sessions on Marijuana Awareness and a panel discussion on “Ride Don’t Drive” presented by Uber. The Summit concluded with a roundtable discussion on the future of transportation, featuring experts in the field of Autonomous Vehicles. A summary report is being prepared to carry forward all of the great ideas that were discussed at the summit.
